An exploration of the way Disney representations of men, women, and relationships have evolved over the years. Disney's groundbreaking commercial success tells us a lot about ourselves, for we are the ones who make it so successful. We decide what we are willing to watch, spend money on, and bring into our homes; we determine the lowest common social denominator.
Based on academic content from the fields of sociology, social psychology, communication, and gender studies, and sprinkled with songs from Disney films. Live accompaniment by pianist and guitarist Dan Bar-Yaacov.
Volunteering with non-profit organizations that raise awareness about gender stereotypes and inequality in contemporary society, in addition to simply living as a feminist, taught me a lot about the difficulties different audiences have in accepting this content.
Hoping to reach a more diverse audience with less resistance, I had the idea of taking popular and beloved Disney content, both visual and musical, and using it to create a form of learning that evokes deep identification and sharp criticism at the same time. This learning makes us aware of our inner conflict, thus helping us understand the change we need to effect in society.
In writing the text of the musical lecture I consulted extensively with
Dr. Shiri Reznik, a social psychologist with a PhD in communications.
